Banderlings

There are two varieties of Banderlings that the Island is home to. They actually look and feel exactly alike. However, there is one difference - in what type of attack and debuff they use. Here they are:

  • Banderling Mauler - Level 120 | 560 Health | 520 Stamina | 300 Mana | Magic Defense 263. These guys attack using Fire War Magic (level IV Fire Bolt) and Fire clubs. They also cast the following debuffs: Imperil Other IV, Cold Vulnerability Other IV. Sometimes they go into UA mode and beat the crap out of you using Bludgeoning. Use Lightning attacks against these guys.
  • Banderling Mangler - Level 120 | 560 Health | 520 Stamina | 300 Mana | Magic Defense 263. These guys attack using Cold War Magic (level IV Frost Bolt) and Frost clubs. They also cast the following debuffs: Imperil Other IV, Fire Vulnerability Other IV. They also sometimes go into UA mode, and are often known to throw Frost Throwing Clubs... grrr... everyone hates those. Again, use Lightning attacks against these guys.
So, these two varieties of Banderlings are pretty darn similar, eh? What's pretty cool is that they "work together" by casting the Vulnerability of the opposite elemental. In other words, the Maulers cast Frost Vuln while doing Fire damage, and the Manglers cast Fire Vuln while doing Cold damage. They cast no other debuffs than the Fire/Cold Vuln IV and Imperil IV, BUT they do use Drain Health spells - so watch your health closely! If you are buffed with level VI protections, you will get used to these debuffs pretty quickly - they are not very harmful. Also, don't bother dispelling the debuffs - as soon as you start fighting again, you will have them casted upon you numerous times. Here're a couple pics of what these Banderlings look like:

Now, let's talk about how to actually fight these dudes. If I fight alone (when I am not playing the role of the support mage hehe), this is the basic sequence that I follow...

  • Select Banderling, stand in a distance where your spell can be cast on the Banderling, but where the Banderling does not attack you automatically (i.e. keep the little orange dot pretty close to the top of the radar).
  • Cast Magic Yield VI. If the bastard resists, cast again!!
  • Here, one of two things may happen - the Banderling can either be a good boy, run over to me and start beating me up, OR it can be a complete bastard and start throwing spells at me, or even worse - Frost Throwing Clubs of DOOM! If the Banderling does not come right away, I cast a bunch of low-level (to save mana) spells on it, in order to make it come. If it persists with the damn Throwing Clubs, I move on.
  • So, the Banderling is running at you flapping its arms. Cast Lightning Vulnerability Other V.
  • Drain Health.. a lot. Keeps your health full and is killing the opponent. Drain Stamina occasionally in order to keep the mana tank full through Stamina-to-Mana. When The Banderling returns around 25 health per drain, I shoot a Lightning Bolt V at it. If it doesn't resist, it dies.
  • LOOT!!! =) Or.. if there are more than one Banderlings attacking me, proceed to the next one.

Sometimes Banderlings decide to be extremely cool and run away from you. Sometimes you can "call em back" with a Drain, or if they are out of the drain range, a War spell. Hell, sometimes it's just fun to shoot some level VII war spells at them:

Anyway... the idea here is - you have to experiment with your fighting technique. Depending on your template, your War school may be your strongest - use it then, bolt that Bandie to death! If your Life school is strongest, I suggest using Drains. However, once again, experiment! Try out different things, see what works best for you. Aaah, one last word of advice... be careful - sometimes MANY Banderlings come after you, pissed that you Magic Yielded their buddy... hell, they come from out of the hills somewhere - you never see it coming. Kinda like this:

Here's a small piece of advice (thanks to Azrith) on Banderlings who decide to throw the Throwing Clubs at you. If you keep shooting Lightning Bolts at it, and get it to approximately 20% of its health, the silly Bandie will run up to you, because it will feel the need to drain your health. I almost didn't believe it when I heard it, but hey - it works! So you can actually drag the stubborn Bandies out of groups using this method without any trouble =).

What kind of loot do Banderlings carry? All kinds of stuff... Celdon, Amuli, Platemail, Scalemail, Yoroi, Orbs/Wands/Staffs, Weapons (they like to drop swords and bows especially), Shields, Magic Clothing, Jewelry (this stuff is usually good.. lvl V/VI stuff), you name it! You often get junk loot you can sell, but sometimes... ooooh yeah =)

As for hunting spots - Banderlings live pretty much everywhere on the Island. If you don't feel like running the whole way around, but don't want to encounter too many people, try going inland. For example, move a click or so to the right of the drop-off point and start moving into the Island, leaving the beach. There are some insane spawns deeper inland - you can attract Bandies using Magic Yield, and boy does it work well sometimes. I do NOT recommend this to an "Island newbie," however - this place can get tough. Sometimes you may get swarmed by Drudges, Shreth, and Bandies. This can get hairy... trust me =)
